A mom from my close circle recently asked how I keep my child engaged during studies. This question made me pause and reflect on our approach to learning. It was such a thoughtful question, and it reminded me how unique every child’s learning journey can be. As we talked, I realized that a significant part of our learning occurs outside formal lessons. It happens through everyday moments that naturally spark curiosity and engagement.
The truth is, my approach to learning has always been about weaving education into daily life. From the time my son was a baby, I’ve made a conscious effort to involve him in everything we do, giving even the smallest interactions a sense of meaning. Whether it’s describing the texture of vegetables as we prep dinner, explaining how gears work while he plays with a toy, or talking about gravity while tossing a ball, I’ve always tried to bring a layer of curiosity and learning into the ordinary.
It’s not that we don’t have formal “study” time—we do, but it’s limited. Our mornings might start with short exercises, and we read in the car or before bed. But beyond that, the bulk of our learning happens naturally, as part of our day. Concepts from books or exercises become part of our conversations and activities. For example, if we read about energy in a book, I’ll reinforce it by explaining how the car’s engine works on a cold day or how a push transfers energy to a stationary object.
This approach reminds me of my early days training new staff at the restaurant where I work. I often thought, “Why didn’t anyone show me around or explain every detail when I was new?” Just because you’re skilled at something doesn’t mean someone else will grasp it right away. Whether it’s a new hire or a child, you have to slow down, break things into simple steps, and provide a detailed introduction to concepts they’re encountering for the first time.
It’s this same mindset I bring to parenting and teaching. I treat my son’s world as if it’s brand new to him—because it is. I name things, explain them, and connect them to his experiences. It’s not a system or curriculum; it’s a lifestyle.
